When preparing for a wedding and reception be sure to pay exceptional attention to the wedding cake.

wedding cakes are one of the most important and memorable features of a wedding.

Make an effort to meet with at least 3 bakers to taste samples of their cakes. be sure to take photos of some cakes you like when meeting with the bakers.

Also, provide the baker an estimated number of attendees that you are expecting for the wedding and reception.

Whenever you meet with the bakers, make sure to ask to see an assortment of pictures that have been taken of the baker’s previous work. Moreover, always check references prior to making a final decision.

ask your married friends for tips and what problems to protect yourself from in picking out a wedding cake.

tips from single friends as to what they liked and disliked regarding wedding cakes can also shed some light from a customer point of view.

When you are meeting with the bakers, move through a summary of questions so that you do not forget anything and so that you can make good and correct comparisons.

Some things to inquire about will be the set-up and take-down of the table where the cake will be, who’ll place the cake topper on the cake, who will place napkins, plates, flowers, etc. on the table, and who will direct the slicing of the cake.

Also, find out the location where the cake is going to be stored (it ought to be away from sunlight), who will be in charge of boxing up the cake top, what preparations will be made for the left-over cake, and who will cut the cake and distribute it. Cutting a wedding cake is really a lot more difficult than it looks and should be done by somebody that is familiar with this process.

When you’re going over a baker’s contract, make sure to observe a number of things. As an illustration, you should immediately see the name, contact person, location, and phone numbers for the bakery. The cake size, shape, and number of tiers must be in the contract. Make certain that the cake flavors, fillings, and icing are noted and that returnable items are clearly stated.

Be sure that the amount of guests the cake is to serve is on the contract as well, when the cake was ordered, when the cake will be delivered and set up, exactly what the set-up fee is, if applicable, and the payment dates for deposits and balances.

Apart from the bride and groom, nothing says wedding like the wedding cake, in past times, the bride and the groom won’t regard so many things when it comes to their cake; however the reverse is now the case as couples now stress so much on their wedding cake designs. Most people often wonder why couples want to make their cake unique. This is because cakes are often considered the focus of the wedding reception. Whether you are going traditional, classical, contemporary, French or modern, there are amazing ways to give your wedding cake an appealing design. Here are some designs that are worth trying.

TRADITIONAL DESIGNS: This kind of design has to do with something very simple, the style and shape is not complex. For couples who want traditional cakes, you can either opt for traditional cakes with pillars or columns or traditional stacked wedding cakes. For traditional wedding cake with pillars, you can fill the spaces created by the pillars with flowers, you can also have the different layers of cake in various shapes, and the number of layers relies on the number of guests you are expecting. The traditional stacked cake is one where the cakes are placed directly on top of each layers, you can have them in different shapes.

CASCADE STAND WEDDING CAKE:For cascading wedding cake designs, other than placing all the sized tiers of cakes directly on each other, they are placed on stands that are much like a staircase. Flowers can be used to decorate the staircase giving you a cascading flow of flower designs down on one side of the cake.

CONTEMPORARY/MODERN WEDDING CAKE:With this type of design nearly anything can go, the designs could be fun, whimsical & elegant and can come in almost any shape imaginable. This type of design will allow the couple express what they really want in terms of flavor, shape, style and color. Apart from the various ways that a modern cake can be designed, there are also various toppers that can be used to finish it.

CUPCAKE PYRAMID WEDDING CAKE:This type of cake is more popular than the others, it is usually shaped like the traditional cake, but in its case instead of having layers of cakes, there are layers of individual cup cakes. They are easy to bake and can be prepared by the bride if the couple is on a budget. Since the cupcake is pre proportioned for each guest, it is easy to serve.

THEME WEDDING CAKE:This cake reflect the couples interest, it can be anything that the bride or groom is synonymous with. It could be their most favorite sport, or their work, or their favorite pet. It could also reflect the venue of the reception, maybe the beach, or a garden like venue. The best way to achieve this effect is through the use of toppers, the toppers would be designed to depict whatever would reflect the couple’s interest.

FAIRY WEDDING CAKE:This should not be seen as childish, as there are elegant cakes with intricate multi turreted tower castle. Sometimes the cake will come in a traditional style and the topper is shaped like a castle. For brides who want to feel like a princess, a fairy wedding cake would do just as well. There are so many cake designs, like the Hawaiian wedding cake, Victorian wedding cake, fountain wedding cake, grooms cake etc. Just make sure you meet an experienced baker to do the job

Wedding Cakes With Personality

Article by Bridget Mora

Weddings are so much more fun than they used to be, don’t you think? They have become less about doing what is traditional and more about allowing the bride and groom to be creative and expressive. In no part of the wedding is this more true than the cake. To make your wedding truly memorable, design a great wedding cake with personality.

When your mother and grandmother were brides, wedding cakes were one color: white. They were also almost always one shape: round. Not only that, but the only acceptable decorations were things like flowers, Swiss dots (especially for brides wearing pearl bridal jewelry), and ribbons. On the top, a prim little bride and groom could be perched, or perhaps a pair of doves or a set of wedding bells. The cake inside was also highly likely to be a basic yellow or white cake. These classic wedding cakes were pretty enough, but they did not allow much opportunity for creative expression.

When it comes to wedding cakes these days, the only rule is that there are no rules! If you are a classic bride wearing your mother’s bridal gown and pearl jewelry, you might still want an all white cake, although yours is more likely to have your monogram on top than a plastic bride and groom figurine. And a white exterior does not necessarily mean a standard flavor of cake on the inside. Brides and grooms are choosing all sorts of flavors, from spice cake to red velvet cake to rich dark chocolate.

Most couples will still choose a somewhat traditional form for their wedding cake, consisting of three or five tiers. Round is still the most popular, but square cakes are also very much in favor. Something else that is being seen more often is cakes with tiers that are intentionally stacked to look crooked or wacky, as well as having a different shape for each tier of the cake. And then there are those couples who throw tradition completely out the window, and have a totally custom cake made like a little three dimensional sculpture in their favorite form. This has long been the custom for groom’s cakes, but now it is also being done for the main wedding cake as well.

It is great fun to design a wedding cake that either is the perfect expression of your wedding theme or that showcases the interests of the bride and groom (even if it does not tie in with the rest of the wedding). For instance, if you were having a tropical wedding, your cake could feature an underwater scene with a profusion of brightly colored tropical fish swimming in a coral reef, all made from fondant and frosting. Or if you met at college, you could have your wedding cake made in your school colors. Why not take it one step further, and have it play the school fight song?

There is no limit to how creative and expressive a wedding cake can be. Cake designers are able to do the most amazing things with cakes these days, including incorporating sound or moving parts. Of course, you may just end up with a cake that looks too incredible to eat!

Wedding Cake Toppers – Perfect Toppers for your Wedding Cake

September 24, 2012 by

Article by Georgina Clatworthy

Wedding cake toppers provide the final finishing touch to wedding cakes and for many brides their choice of topper is a personal one. You will find many choices available when it comes to toppers and your wedding cake designer should be able to guide you to the best choice in terms of the style and decoration of your wedding cake and the style of your wedding.

Here are just a few of the choices available to your for your cake topper:

Flowers are possibly the most popular choice and the cheapest. It is often the case that your florist will throw in small wired flowers for your wedding cake for free when you purchase all your other floral requirements from them.

Sugar flowers are another popular alternative to fresh ones, however, these can be very expensive and you could need a lot to decorate your cake, as you would often include flowers on the other tiers as well as on the top.

Just make sure that the flowers you use on your cake match those used in the rest of your floral decorations and your bouquets. A cake covered in exotic orchids will look odd if the rest of your flowers are roses and stocks.

Monogram cake toppers are the newest kids on the block and are fast becoming a popular choice. They are available in brushed metal and clear plastic versions and can include embellishments such as crystals. For a wedding cake it is customary to use three letters – the brides initial, the grooms initial and your surname initial in the center. An alternative option is to use two letters representing your initials, some couples also choose to add the ‘&’ symbol as well in the center.

Traditional cake toppers are figurines of the bride and groom standing proud on the top of the cake. In recent years there has been many whimsical variations on this which include figurines of the bride dragging the groom; the groom carrying the bride and versions which have the groom climbing up the cake tiers.

For many the traditional topper is still king and some even use their parents cake topper on their wedding cake which makes a lovely gesture and can count towards the bride’s ‘something borrowed’ or ‘something old’.

Whimsical cake toppers are modeled from clay and are designed using a photograph of the bride and groom to create life like replicas of them. Some are very artistic and formal, whilst others are more whimsical and show them in a comical light. Often if one or both of the couple wear a uniform in their job, such as police work or the armed forces, then that is included on the model. The advantage with this type of topper is that they make wonderful keepsakes and can be on display in the home permanently.

Modern wedding cake toppers include elaborate beaded crowns, crests of feathers and crystals, heart shaped glass frames with a picture of the couple and simple brushed metal shapes.

Whatever your choice of wedding cake topper, make sure it will coordinate with your wedding cake and your wedding style. If you are having a wedding theme make sure you choose a topper that matches that also. If you cannot find a topper that is perfectly suited then you can either have something custom made or simply opt for flowers which will coordinate with any wedding style and theme.
